ATALM selected Cherokee, North Carolina as its 2025 location because it is the tribal capital of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. It is a cultural and historical hub that has preserved the traditions and way of life of the Cherokee people for 11,000 years. Not only does this vibrant cultural environment provide the perfect backdrop for ATALM2025, it also allows us to honor the groundbreaking work of the Museum of the Cherokee People in advancing ethical returns and tribe-to-tribe repatriation of cultural items. As a leader in these efforts, the Museum is setting a powerful example for Indigenous communities and cultural institutions worldwide, emphasizing the importance of stewardship, collaboration, and respect for ancestral heritage.
ATALM attendees will have an opportunity to experience authentic Cherokee culture and craftsmanship at the Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual, the oldest Native American cooperative in the United States, where over 350 juried artisans create exquisite baskets, carvings, jewelry, and other works using techniques passed down through generations.
Cherokee also offers numerous outdoor and historical attractions. The Oconaluftee Indian Village, a living-history museum, showcases traditional Cherokee life and hosts the renowned outdoor drama Unto These Hills, which chronicles the Cherokee story from the 1780s to the present. The Oconaluftee River is a major destination for water sports, and Cherokee serves as a gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway.
