Grant Funding and Partnerships
Many tribal libraries face unique challenges in securing funding, often due to a combination of limited grant eligibility, geographic isolation, and limited local revenue sources. However, some tribal libraries have developed innovative approaches to raise funds. Here are examples of how tribal libraries access funding.
- Technology Grants: Many organizations offer funding to promote digital inclusion in tribal communities. Look for grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, National Endowment for the Humanities, Administrative for Native Americans, and local technology companies.
- Partnerships: Collaborate with schools, cultural centers, local colleges, or technology companies for funding, equipment donations, or volunteer instructors. Partnering with regional tech firms can also provide mentorship opportunities for youth.
- State Library Agency and State/Regional Library Associations: Check with your state agency to see what funding and resources it provides. More information is available HERE.
- TechSoup: Tribal libraries are now eligible for funding from TechSoup for software, hardware, training, and other valuable resources. More information HERE.
- E-Rate Funding: E-Rate, a program managed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), provides discounts on telecommunications, internet access, and internal networking services to eligible schools and libraries, including tribal libraries. More information available HERE.
Revenue Generation
- Fee-Based Services: Offer certain advanced services, like 3D printing, on a pay-per-use basis. Any revenue can support ongoing maintenance and expansion.
- Fundraising Events: Host community events, such as technology fairs or digital showcases, to raise funds and spread awareness about your library’s technology programs.
