Scholarship Application

  • Scholarships are made possible through support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and other generous donors.
  • Approximately 100 scholarships are awarded.
  • Scholarships cover shared lodging and conference registration. Travel, per diem, and other costs are not covered.
  • Incomplete applications are not considered.

ATALM2025 SCHOLAR KEY DATES:

  • April 10 – Deadline for submitting applications.
  • April 28 – ATALM2025 Scholars announced.
  • October 7-9 – Conference in Cherokee, North Carolina

Two Options are Available:

  • Option 1: Conference registration only. Registration includes two breakfasts and two lunches.
  • Option 2: Conference registration, a preconference workshop, and four nights shared lodging (October 6, 7, 8, 9).

Obligations of Scholarship Recipients

  • Sign a scholarship agreement committing to fulfilling the terms of the scholarship and meeting specified deadlines, as well as committing to funding costs not covered by the scholarship.
  • Participate in nine concurrent sessions. You are required to confirm attendance by signing in and out of sessions.
  • Volunteer at least one hour before, during, or after the conference.
  • Provide a written evaluation of the conference and the scholar experience.

Applicant Criteria

  • Reside or work in the United States.
  • Employed by a tribal archive, library, museum, language, or historic preservation organization.
  • Employed by a non-tribal cultural institution but directly work with Indigenous materials and/or peoples.
  • Enrolled in a library, museum, or Native studies program.

Selection Criteria the Scholarship Review Committee Considers

  • The extent the applicant is involved with Native collections.
  • The extent to which the applicant will benefit from the conference.
  • Financial need.
  • The number of applications received from the same organization. Multiple applications per organization are permitted, but typically only one scholarship is awarded to the staff member most involved with tribal collections.
  • If the applicant is a United States resident. Note that IMLS funds cannot be used for non-U.S. residents.

Application Process

  • Scholarship applications must be submitted online through the Submittable platform. Use this link. If you do not already have a Submittable account, you will be prompted to establish one.
  • Submittable works best on Google ChromeFirefox, current versions of Microsoft Edge, and Safari.
  • Save a draft of your work if you would like to complete it later. More information on saving your work may be found here.
  • If you need to make changes to an application you have already submitted before April 10th, you may withdraw your submission, edit it, and resubmit. More information on editing submitted applications may be found here.
  • If the information you submitted changes after the deadline, you may request authorization to edit the submission. More information on requesting changes may be found here.
  • Once you submit your application, you will receive automated emails from Submittable confirming your submission. Please be sure to safelist emails from notifications@email.submittable.com. More information may be found here.
  • Scholarship notifications are expected to go out on or about April 28, 2025.
